When you live in a house, and not in an apartment from a complex, taking care of it and maintaining it might seem a challenge sometimes. This is because there are plenty of things to do around a house, and the bills are not the only ones that you have to take care of.
If you have a yard, you have to make sure that it is properly maintained, but you also have to take care of the whole house, this meaning the exterior and the interior part of it. When thinking about this, many people forget to consider the roof of the house too, but what you surely realize now is that the roof is one of the most important parts of the house.
Because of this, taking care of your roof is very important and this needs proper maintenance just like any other part of your house. Don’t postpone checking it up or don’t avoid fixing it – if you do this, just think how much money it will cost you in the future.
Here’s what to do for your roof, at least from time to time.
Check It From Outside
This is usually called a visual inspection and you don’t have to pay someone to do it, as you can do it by yourself. Just step outside and look at the roof from any possible angle – you really have to see the entire surface of it, to make sure there are no missing pieces and no holes in it.
De-clutter the Draining Pipes
The draining pipes allow the water to fall directly on the earth, without touching too much of the walls in case of a heavy rainstorm. If the drainage is cluttered, that needs to be removed, especially when the rainy season comes.
Cleaning the debris can be easily done with a ladder and some gloves, as all you have to do is step up on the ladder until you reach the drains. Take out everything you find there, like dried leaves or other kind of debris that the wind can bring on your roof. Cleaned draining pipes will make it easier for the water to flow down.
Check the Inside
When you finish with these two steps, go inside and step up in the attic. If you have insulation in your attic, make sure that it is still intact. There should be no water spots, no mold and no humidity. If you see any of those, then this means that there is a breaking point on the roof where the water flowed inside. A small spot night mean a small damage, but if you see bigger water spots or water directly on the floor of the attic, then you need to call for a professional to check the structure of the roof.
The Roof Inspection
This is an inspection made by a professional. They are specially trained to identify any possible problem that you might have with your roof. They will also give you a written report with what is wrong and what it needs to be repaired, depending on the damage.
The next step after this is to call for a roofing company, but make sure you get someone who is licensed and has the knowledge to work with your roofing material. Not everyone is specialized in the same type of roofing, so choose carefully the person who you trust this job with.
House insurance is mandatory, but even if you feel that you pay some money for nothing, don’t be so sure about this. The insurance usually covers plenty of things, but to be sure about it, choose an insurance that also covers the damages made by the water elements. In this case, if your roof has been damaged after a storm or something similar like a heavy rain or a heavy snow, the insurance will cover the costs of the repairs or the replacement of the roof.
